Bumble (BMBL) Outperforming in Dating App Mentions

LikeFolio data shows that mentions of using or meeting someone on a dating app is at an all-time high, and +29% higher vs. last year.

  • In 2020, online dating revenue in the U.S. reached $602 million, and is expected to increase to $755 million by 2024
  • According to a Stanford University study, over 40% of all heterosexual marriages in the U.S. now begin online

For young people, this is increasingly the new standard:

We're following two major players in the dating game: MTCH and BMBL. Match Group supports 14 different platforms, with the most popular being TinderHingeOkCupid, and Plenty of Fish in the consumer realm, according to LikeFolio tag rankings. Bumble is a recent IPO with a much smaller footprint. LikeFolio data shows very different near-term trajectories for each company:

While Match Group boasts a much larger sample size, Bumble appears to be stealing market share.  BMBL Consumer Happiness is +5 points higher, and QoQ growth is accelerating. We'll be closely monitoring moving forward. If this short-term momentum continues to grow for BMBL and to wane for MTCH, it could be a really great opportunity for investors.
